Basil is a member of the mint family and its oils and extracts are said to have antioxidant and antibacterial properties. It is also a good source of Vitamins A and C, iron, calcium, and potassium.

Spring and summer are great times to plant herbs. You can teach your children about the benefits of planting your own organic herbs without the use of harmful pesticides and chemicals. Basil is very easy to grow. It grows best in the sun and requires rich, well-drained soil.

Basil is excellent on pasta, fish, pizza and any vegetable dish. As a busy mom of twins twice, I’m always looking for quick and easy ways to keep my children eating organic and healthy. So next time you want to give your meal an extra splash of antioxidant power, just sprinkle on some fresh home-grown basil.
